Develops and distributes products and services that support individual and collective initiative for building a culture of peace in our society. Offers educational programs to build the capacity for peace leadership at the community, national, and international level. Provides consulting, training, and organizational development services to major companies and international organizations, specializing in issues of leadership, diversity, multi-cultural effectiveness, strategic planning, organizational development, women's empowerment, youth development, and creative conflict management.
1992 - 2001: Co-founder and president, Institute for Multi-Track Diplomacy (IMTD), Washington, DC
Articulated and disseminated a groundbreaking systems approach to peacebuilding and conflict transformation (Multi-Track Diplomacy). Practiced this approach to inter-ethnic relations in places of deep-rooted conflict around the world, including the Middle East, Cyprus, Bosnia, India and Pakistan, Kenya, Tanzania, Liberia, and elsewhere, building sustainable inter-group relations across ethnic, political, tribal, and cultural divides. Worked extensively with efforts for multi-cultural awareness and peace education, training teachers and students from war zones to work with educational change and curriculum development. Major presenter at many professional conferences on international peacebuilding and cross-cultural communication. Wrote numerous articles for professional venues and IMTD's Occasional Paper series. Provided training programs for professional development. Networked extensively with like organizations to explore critical issues in the international arena, and to explore the interface between theory and practice in conflict transformation and inter-ethnic peacebuilding.
1984 - Present: Peace Minister, Sunray Meditation Society, worldwide
Developed curriculum and oversaw faculty of 50 teachers for The PeaceKeeper Mission, a multi-year educational program on core principles and practices for creating a more peaceful world. Applies these principles in various settings around the world.
1988 - 1992: Founder and president, PeaceWorks, Takoma Park, Maryland
Wrote Multi-Track Diplomacy: A Systems Approach to Peace, and numerous articles for local magazines and professional journals. Worked extensively in the Middle East, providing training, facilitating dialogue, and supporting local peacebuilders. Produced a one-hour video for public television on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Many Voices, One Song. Provided training and consulting in diversity and multi-cultural awareness.
1974 - 1988: Private practice as organizational consultant and therapist, Vermont and Washington, DC
Provided consulting services to companies, schools, and communities on issues of diversity, leadership, communications, conflict resolution, power and authority, systems thinking, human relations, and group dynamics. Offered individual, family, and group therapy. Worked extensively with people who had life-threatening diseases, and issues of personal and spiritual growth.
1978 - 1984: Founder and director, Elders in Touch, Vermont
Designed and delivered a holistic health education program for senior citizens around the state of Vermont. Wrote extensively for local publications on issues related to elder care and health. Offered workshops on related subjects.
1974 - 1978: Co-founder and therapist, Networks, Burlington, Vermont
Provided counseling and therapy services to individuals, couples, families, and children. Also provided consulting services to organizations and schools throughout Vermont.
1970 - 1974: Drug and Alcohol Abuse Education Specialist, Vermont
Worked extensively with Vt. Department of Education, school administrators, guidance counselors, teachers and students on preventive approaches to drug and alcohol abuse. Designed and delivered one- and two-week long workshops on related topics.
1969 - 1972: High school Teacher, Michigan and Vermont
Taught grades 9-12 in the following subjects: English, American History, Journalism, Sociology, and Conservation.
