How to Change the World
An Advanced Training Program for Agents of Social Changenth

Offered by Louise Diamond, Ph.D., and Guest Faculty

Course Description |Course Registration | Private Coaching Registration | Scholarship Fund | Faculty

The Opportunity
Humanity stands at an extraordinary point of transformation. Globalization, climate change, threats of terrorism – these and other circumstances provide us with an opportunity to realize that some of the old ways we have operated are no longer useful. Exciting new ways of being together on and with this earth are emerging in every field. Those who are called to lead this shift are agents of Social Change
nth. I add the ‘to the nth degree’ because this social change process, wisdom-based in the truth of our interdependence, promotes an exponential and evolutionary leap toward the better world we are creating. (To Register...)

The Offering
This advanced training program will cover the four core areas, or Four Wisdom Ways, in which understanding and skill are critical to the success of Social Change
nth:

  • Transformation, the Way of Quantum Change
  • Cooperation, the Way of Creative Synergy

In each area, we will blend lessons from nature, the social and physical sciences, and universal spiritual wisdom. We will consider key principles and practices, while focusing on practical application and the role of the self as a change agent. Individual and collective life wisdom and experiences will play a major role in our learning laboratory.

Course Structure
The course is offered as a year-long program of intensive study and training, structured on a sessional basis. Each session’s program, beginning in winter of 2008, covers one of the Four Wisdom Ways and consists of:

  • A 4-day intensive workshop with Louise Diamond and Guest Faculty
  • Monthly study materials
  • Teleconference calls with experts in the field
  • Online dialogue on specific topics

Though the course is designed as an integrated four-session program, participants may choose to take one or more sessions separately, space permitting. Some opportunities for individual coaching are also available. In addition, a modified home-study option is available for those for whom the travel and the onsite intensive are not viable.

What Will the Course Cover?

Session 3, Summer 2008: Transformation, the Way of Quantum Change
Intensive: July 11-14, Lincoln, Vermont

What You Will Study
The change called for in these times is profoundly transformative. Humanity is taking a quantum leap in consciousness, and is creating a world we can barely imagine. The transformative process is the map that allows us to be effective in bringing forward this new world we envision.

In this session we explore everything we know about change, the how, the why (and the why not), the what, the who, and the when. We explore the different types of change, and delve deeply into the Heroic Journey as a model for transformation. We consider how Social Change
nth differs from traditional social change. We learn what facilitates transformation and what hinders it. We examine past social change movements as well as our own life histories to elicit success factors that we can adapt to our own systems. We delve deeper into the role of the Agent of Social Changenth.

What You Will Learn

  • How to assess readiness for change in a system
  • How to encourage motivation for change
  • How to determine the appropriate type of change called for
  • How to determine the best leverage points where small changes can bring big results
  • How to manage the inevitable resistance to and unintended consequences of change in yourself and others
  • How to address deeply imbedded patterns that impede transformation
  • How to use the Heroic Journey as a model for transformative systems change
  • How to be a catalyst for transformation from both inside and outside the system
  • How to apply lessons from previous change processes to the system you are engaged with
  • How ‘being the change we seek’ affects your life and effectiveness as an Agent of Social Changenth

Session 4, Fall 2008: Cooperation, the Way of Creative Synergy
Intensive: October 10-13; Lincoln, Vermont

What You Will Study
Because of our interconnectedness with all that is, we are constantly and collectively shaping the world we live in.  When we consciously put our hearts and minds together for the greater good we can unleash the infinite potential inherent in our vision and in every person and every situation.

In this session we examine how it is that we bring the tangible visible world into being through our choices, our actions, our words, and our thoughts. We explore the dynamics of co-creativity and co-evolution; of synergy and synthesis. We look at the various forms of cooperation to achieve shared goals, solve problems, and make decisions. Finally, we explore the realm of creativity and intuition that give us access to new insights and possibilities, so that we can call forth and actualize the latent promise within the system. Thus creative synergy is the method for Social Change
nth.

What You Will Learn

  • How to manage the processes of actualization and co-creativity, consciously and ethically
  • How to find common ground, shared interests, synergy, synthesis, and creative possibilities where there are profound differences in views or approaches
  • How to apply decision-making and problem-solving processes that nurture systems
  • How to unlock the potential for the greatest good in systems
  • How to be present in and read the energy of emergent moments
  • How to build alliances, revolutionary partnerships, networks, and other forms of cooperation within and between systems
  • How to directly access the realms of creativity and intuition for transformative change
  • How creative synergy affects your life and effectiveness as an Agent of Social Changenth

Course Methodology

Intensives
Each intensive will be run as a learning community, where each person’s experience and wisdom is essential to the learning of all.  The sessions will be highly experiential and participatory, using a variety of modes of learning (cognitive, audio, visual, expressive, and kinetic). Theory and practice, information and application will be emphasized. Intensives also include mini-sessions with Guest Faculty, and occasional field trips.

Monthly Study Materials
A selection of study materials (reading/audio), plus suggestions for reflection and journaling on the material, will be sent at the beginning of each month of the session.

Online Dialogues
Two time-limited (two week) online dialogue sessions will be offered after each intensive, spread over the remainder of the three-month session. These sessions will focus on particular topics that have emerged out of the intensive, and that are supported by the study materials.

Teleconferences
Several one-hour teleconferences per session will be scheduled in the months following the intensive, featuring experts in the field of study for that period.
